The Honda Motor Co., Ltd., was founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda and Takeo Fujisawa, who helped launch the company’s first vehicle — the “Dream” D-Type motorcycle — in 1949. It proved to be aptly named, since it led to the kind of success Honda must have dreamed about: Just 15 years later, Honda was the best-selling motorcycle maker in the world. Yet right around the same time, in 1963 to be exact, the brand had begun taking its engineering expertise in a new direction — with the debut of Honda’s first car. An obvious evolution of the company’s motorcycle efforts, the Honda S500 even had motorcycle-style chain-driven rear wheels.
Honda began exporting cars to the United States in 1969, right in time for the oil crisis of the 1970s. At that point, with customers clamoring for smaller, more efficient transportation, Honda brought out the 1972 Civic and 1976 Accord for a 1-2 punch that really put the brand on the map for U.S. customers.
