Three separate automakers actually responded to the government’s call for vehicle designs — Ford, Bantam, and Willys-Overland — and the final product took features from all three. But it was Willys that won the first production contract, so that it was also well-positioned to keep producing Jeeps for retail customers after World War II ended. Indeed, the lineup had expanded to include the country’s first all-steel wagon and the brand’s first truck before the end of the 1940s.
Jeep then began an automotive journey of its own: It was purchased by Kaiser Motors in 1953, American Motors in 1970, and the Chrysler Corporation in 1987. Jeep went all-in on global growth when Fiat bought Chrysler in 2014, and all three of those names became part of the multinational Stellantis group in 2021. Today, Jeep is well known worldwide for building fearless SUVs and trucks that satisfy owners the world over — including right here in Portland.
