Volkswagen grew out of Germany’s “People’s Car” project of the 1930s, which was aimed at helping make vehicle ownership more affordable for more German citizens. The result was a car designed by Ferdinand Porsche — who would go on to build a fairly famous auto brand of his own — and immediately recognizable as an early Beetle. The same basic design carried on to incredible success after World War II, and, in some markets, it was still being built right up to 2003. The bottom line: More than 21 million Beetles were sold worldwide during its 50+ years in production.
Volkswagen of America was established to sell the brand’s vehicles in 1958, right in time for both the Beetle and the “microbus” to become key members of the U.S. counterculture.
